How to adopt?

Whether you want to adopt an animal that found shelter at Het Dierenthuisje, one from the section “direct placement” or by some other way, first read this information.

Do you still want to adopt a cat or other animal after you’ve read the text below? Give us a call or send an e-mail to ask if we have any suggestion for an animal that fits to your expectations and your family.

Het Dierenthuisje only works by appointment.  Everything is talked over extensively, so you and the animal
can be helped.

In case of an adoption we’re always there to help solve problems.

In the section “ adoption from Het Dierenthuisje”you’ll find mostly senior animals or animals with a medical problem for now or in the past.

If you don’t want such an animal, don’t look further in this section.  In that case you can better look in the section “direct adoptions”,where you might find a suitable candidate.
The difference in mode of working  you can find in the sections “Adopting from Het Dierenthuisje”or “Direct adoption”

Do you really have the conviction to help a pitiable animal and you ‘re aware that it might be hard in financial and emotional aspects surely look in this section and you’re welcome to have a look at our
permanent residents.

Although it isn’t expressly mentioned,we want to give a few of them a chance have a home of their own, when the ideal adopter comes along.

As we live day and night between our animals,we know them thoroughly. So it’s possible to choose a suitable animal for you. We first tell you all the positive and negative sides of the animal,so you know what to expect. This is very important in case you already have a cat or dog.

It might be possible that some animals aren’t placed separately when we know that two animals are very close. It is not our intention to find a home for  our animals as soon as possible, but as good as possible. Neither is it our intention to force people to take two animals at the same time. Our main issue is the welfare of our animals.

Factors in your favour, when an adopted animal leaves Het Dierenthuisje :

1  We always stay at your disposition, whenever there is any problem after the adoption. Some animals stay in foster families, where they get all the necessary care and attention. In this way we have smaller groups which are better prevented from diseases.

All animals get good quality food, with natural ingredients(Life Time Petfood) and twice a day a portion of good quality canned food. Although we mostly give shelter to seniors, animals with medical problems or slight beauty flaws,Once in a while younger animals cross our path. They often have fallen behind in case of illness,under-cooling and handicaps like blindness, which frequently occurs with dumped kittens.

In case of adoption of a senior or a special case, you certainly get all information and the medical files, belonging tot his animal. If necessary even with the support of a vet.

If you really want to adopt an ailing animal ,look among our residents. Some of them can be placed perfectly and would love to get more attention.  We never leave an adopter or adopted animal on his own. We
will never lie about character or medical history,as we are very well aware this is not in the advantage of the animal. We always want the best for both parties.

When you’ve adopted an animal you get a letter with information about care, worm-treatment,vaccination and so on.

All adult animals are neutered or sterilized.

All animals are at least checked by a qualified vet,  have an identification chip and have had
treatment against worms and fleas.

Whether the animal is vaccinated or not depends on its health and age.

We make a contract for every adoption.
When you adopt a kitten you ‘re obliged to have the animal neutered before the date mentioned in the contract. For this we give you a form that needs to be filled in by the vet who treats the animal.  You ‘ll have to return us this form after the animal is neutered.

The price for the adoption of a kitten is € 60.- The price of an adult animal (already neutered) is € 80.-

For the adoption of an very frightened or very old animal there’s no fixed price. We’ll ask you to pay us € 25.- for the membership of our foundation, raised with a voluntary donation.

Whether you want to adopt an animal from Het Dierenthuisje,  one directly from the first owner or by another way, please read this important piece of information.

When you wish to adopt a cat,it’s very important to consult  the possible other members of the family,to make a list of what you can offer the cat and what you expect of its behaviour.

Yearly a huge amount of animals is dumped in shelters because they didn’t come up to the expectations of their owner. We always want to avoid this. Most of these cases are about very young animals that have been given a home with the intention to train it,to fit to the owners ideas.

Don’t fool yourself,a kitten however young it might be,has a personality that will show when the animal reaches the age of 5 to 6 months. If you’ve no expectations at all,the character doesn’t matter. However, when you have preferences, for instance you want a cat that sits in your lap all day or a
cat has to stay in the house every day of its life, don’t take the risk of adopting a young animal, from which the character  hasn’t developed yet. It’s not true that the little one will settle down because its used to it ever since he was very young.

In every situation it’s important that you give a clear sketch of how the cat is going live and what you expect. That indicates:

* Will the cat be able to go outside or is he due to stay in?

* Will the animal be alone most time of the day/night?

* What do you expect from the personality of the cat?

Below we talk about different situations. Obviously your situation can be different. You can ask
information without engagement. We weigh pros and cons of your specific question. In the last paragraph we give some general advise that fits into each situation.

Please read these before you take a decision.

If the cat will be alone all day it’s important to know its personality,so you can be sure the cat can handle this. Opposite to what most ignorant people think a cat is not a solitary creature but a very social animal. Therefore consider the purchase of two animals, who are already friends or one that’s used to being alone and is happy in that situation.

If it’s possible to allow the cat to go outside through a catflap during your absence there is much more diversion that makes the cat less frustrated or bored.

Very important is the behaviour of the dog towards cats.If he is not used to them at all,it is of great importance that you are willing  (if necessary) to act decisively to teach the dog to leave the cat at ease.

Each cat, whatever the age is,can get used to a dog on condition  he ’s not chased and the dog is no threat.

Do you know that you’re not able to act firmly towards your dog,ask yourself if you want the inconvenient situation that the animals live like CAT AND DOG.The first weeks are decisive. Anyway it’s not sensible to leave a kitten under 5 month with a dog that isn’t used to cats.

The kitten has no idea of danger and doesn’t know how to defend itself. Exceptions are older dogs that are calm and quiet. Although even then there are some rules, above all during the feeding and the carressing.

In this case it's very important that you know all about the personality of your cat.

So we can introduce you to an suitable candidate. Obviously the accomodation is important as well. Most important however is that you don’t interfere in the new situation. Don’t put the new cat in a separate room and don’t sent your cat outside when you’re coming home with the new one. You will create the urge to defend the territory which won’t be good for the relationship between the species.

Be sure not to choose a affectionate cat when it’s not the intention that the cat comes into the house. Neither for the animal nor you it’s pleasant to have a mewer at your door or window.

There are lots of shy cats who rather live outside and who become paranoid when they are between walls. Most of the time these cats come out and become good friends with their fostercarer.Love and patience mean a lot.

Opposite to what most people claim,a cat is not a solitary animal but much more a social animal that needs and seeks contact with species of the same kind.

People make them anti social by keeping them apart from the time they were a kitten.

A child that’s not allowed to make contact with other children will also show communicative disorders. We all know you can’t take away any social contact from your child, why is it so hard to understand when it
concerns a cat?

Especially people that at any price want to adopt only one kitten, that’ll be home alone all day severly act against animal wellfare.

Most of the cats that are dumped in a shelter were bought as a kitten and dumped at the age of 5 , 6 month to 1,5 year, the age when the personality is shown. Most of the time there are reactions of frustration
and boredom that finds expression in vandalism, spraying and mean behaviour(attacking/biting) towards the owner.

That doesn’t mean it will never succeed. It can’t be altered that there are kittens that want to conform to a selfish owner.By no means will this promote the happiness of the animal.

As we always choose the best for cat and adopter we don’t take part in this. If you still want to keep one cat alone, the animal is on his own all day and can’t get out,by which he looses all social contact,we can
introduce you to an abandoned cat that grew up in such a situation and resigned to it.
Obviously these are animals that were not abandoned because they were unhappy in their situation, but cats that became anti social with their own species because they can only be happy when they live as only cat. In that case you do make an animal happy.

It’s better not to adopt kittens when they are very young.
The ideal situation for a kitten is to stay with the mother untill the age of 12 weeks ( 16 weeks is even better)
The kitten can’t be vaccinated as early as two weeks after he has stopped sucking. As vaccination has some risk the kitten can’t be moved  before the tenth day after his vaccination. Injections can never be given when there are signs of illness, how small it might be. It would bring down the immunity of the animal, which could cause a severe attack of the illness with death as a result.

Protect yourself from the argument that it’s good for a child to take a very young kitten,so that they can watch it grow up.The chance of diseases and death is much higher than with an adult cat, which often causes lots of grief.

If you adopt a kitten of barely 12 weeks be aware of the fact that this is a very vulnerable creature. If a kitten doesn’t eat or drink and has diarrhea for only one day it will become dehydrated. Then the young
life might be already lost.

Therefore it is very important that you are able to spend  lots of time with the kittens and be aware of any change in their behaviour.

When you still have young children,it’s wise not to adopt kittens that are too young.

Foremost a kitten is very prone to stress, vulnerable and besides that you don’t know the personality. Rather adopt an animal whose character has already shown,so you are sure the children will have a good friend.Unnecessary to say that an animal can never be used as a toy.

If your child(ren) ask for a cat only agree to it when you are 100% sure.

Of course it stimulates your childs sense of responsibility, when it has to take care of an animal, but be convinced that you want to take the full care if your child doesn’t look after the cat any more.

General statements about personality traits of tomcats and female cats are better swept from the table. Just as people cats don’t have specific male or female traits.Every animal has it's own personality and you have to
take it into account.
However in what ever situation you accomodate the cat there are few things you’ll have to  provide  before you proceed the adoption of a cat.

A cat tray with litter. Best use clumping litter .So it will be sufficient to remove the clumbs twice a day. In this way the litter stays clean and won’t smell. We recommend “Cats Best“ clumping litter. We think it’s the best.

A carrier,we prefer one with an iron door.Plastic doors aren’t strong enough to hold a cat that’s in a panic.

A rush carrier is very decorative, but not as a mean of transport, because it doesn’t shut well.

Even if you can borrow someone’s carrier it’s better to buy one yourself.   In case of emergency you will be glad to have it at hand.

Food-and drinkbowls: best take seperate bowls so don’t get food in the water. The drinkingbowl should be a large one. Cats don’t like to drink from a small bowl. The bigger the bowl, the better they drink.Perfect is a waterfountain. The steady flow of the water makes the cat drink more. One of the main causes of healthproblems with cats is too little liquid absorption.

A waterfountain mostly prevents this. Perfect for cats that like to drink from the tap.

You need two food bowls for one cat. One for dry and one for wet food.

When you have more then one cat, count one bowl per cat for wet food. For dry food one bowl is enough.Adjust the size to the number of cats.

Scratching post: a solid one that is at least as high as twice the lenght of the stretched cat.

A post that is too short or unstable will fall down and frighten the cat,who will look for other ways to scratch, which won’t please the owner.

Toys: however old or young it’s important to take care of enough distraction and diversion.

Keep in mind that your cat -regardless of its age-will sleep 85 % of the time. Permit it that rest cause it
stimulates its health and life expectancy. There are a lot of smart toys, but a  fur mouse,a little ball or a peacock
feather are ideal toys for a cat. Often they play with a plastic bag or a woollen ball. Don’t let it linger because it’s dangerous. It might choke your cat. Also be careful with things on elastic strings, ropes or springs that you can attach to the scratching post or a door handle. The cat might hang itself, when the string ends up around its neck.

Food: supply  good dry food, with as little as possible chemical colourants, fragrances or preservatives. The
latter ingredients often cause bladdergrit,  kidneystones etc.

As wetfood you can choose cans, foil or pouches. Choose the better brands,so you buy food with less ingredients like caramel, which causes health problems. Keep in mind that economizing on food means a high bill at the vet.

Be very careful with rotating windows. Many cats hang themselves because they try to get outside along such a window.they jump up the window frame and fall down while their head gets stuck in the gap and their paws can’t reach the floor.Avoid this and keep that kind of windows shut or buy a wooden wedge or similar to close the side-gap.
